Simple Sunday - Bodyguard

BMG has a lot of rules, and sometimes it helps to go over some of them in a bit more detail. Details help us remember! Today, we're looking at Bodyguard.
If you don't know where this image is from...congratulations!  You are not old!

Bodyguard rules. It really does. And here's what it does:

Bodyguard (1sc passive): if a character with Leader or Sidekick within 5cm of the character is hit by an attack of any kind, the Bodyguard Character takes the hit instead.

For the price of one Special (sc), your Bodyguard takes the entire attack (all dice). You must declare that this is being used after Impacts are generated, but before rolls for Injury. This works against both ranged and melee attacks.

This means that Assault Rifle bursts miss their intended target and hit someone much more expendable. It also means that incredible Combo attacks all swing wild of your Leader and hit your Bodyguard instead. I don't know about you, but I don't mind giving up 2vp to get a chance to counter-attack with my Leader. It sure beats giving up the vp for just seeing your leader die - or even, in some cases, lose action counters for taking damage. Sometimes you need to keep your leader in top functioning form!
Here's an example:

Lieutenant Branden opens fire on Bane with his MG. It has RoF 3 and does 2 Blood damage. Branden rolls a 2, 3, and 5. Bane has a Defense of 3, so Branden scores 2 hits.

I definitely want to avoid taking 4 possible Blood damage, so I activate Bodyguard (1sc) on Prisoner 04, who happens to be standing nearby. Branden now rolls his Injury rolls, but all Blood will be inflicted upon Prisoner 04, not Bane. Branden succeeds at both, so Prisoner 04 sucks back 4 Blood and dies...but I prefer that to losing 4 Blood off my leader in this case.

Bodyguard also facilitates convenient action counter dumps, because that Special allows you to take a bunch of actions (including Pushing, Grabbing, and recovering Stun) if Bodyguard doesn't come up. So grab your Bodyguard and add some protection to your most important model!

  1. I love using Bodyguard on my League of Shadows henchmen, especially High Security Prisoner or Mr Stikk, to protect Ra's.

Would be nice to see an Ubu large figure with this trait in the future to accompany his master.

    1. That's probably the most powerful use of Bodyguard in the game. Ras is already insanely difficult to hit (Def 5, Martial Arts), and the Bodyguard Tattoo means that you can choose to take advantage of Sustained Defence or sacrificing a goon to the attack...or BOTH.
