I've Started Watching Arrow

I added Arrow to my rotation of shows to watch once Sons of Anarchy finished. The choice to pick it up was due to so many of my friends talking about Arrow.  The damned show was good enough for me to keep watching.  I do have a few problems with the show but they aren't the usual issues I'd have with the superhero genre.  Most of the fun for me is when they do villain of the week and just stating them out in my head for the Batman Miniature Game.  I don't see why they don't do more of a crossover, as Arrow is much more the right feel than the Flash which random players have been begging for.

My usual dose of superhero television is The Blacklist and Person of Interest.  Person of Interest because it is a show about Batman being split between two characters, which makes the movie much more believable. The Blacklist for introducing interesting villains of the week.  I previously gave Gotham a lot of praise, but didn't watch a single episode afterwards because I feared the show would be terrible.  Reviews from different websites seem to agree with my guess.  Plus the whole Penny Arcade review nails an issue that troubles viewers.
With Arrow, they've got the superhero and his various teammates plus they introduce interesting villains.  I also do like the various casting choices they've made. British Columbia is very popular place to shoot television, so I would be amused by seeing an actor "make their rounds" by guest starring in other television shows that are also being filmed.  Seeing an actor who I know from Supernatural show up in Arrow episode made me chuckle, as I'd try to forget that while they're on Arrow they aren't a vampire or perhaps no longer a gladiatorial slave.

The Batman Miniature Game is going towards more of a New 52 feel with their miniatures, but I think getting a bit more inspiration from the Arrow television show can garner more interest.  War games aren't usually a casual gamer type of endeavour, so the Batman game can really bring in an untapped audience. The Black Canary model versus the Black Canary in the television show.  I think what I like about Arrow is it feels very much like the Marvel's series of Ultimates.
In the early noughties, Marvel made a new line called the Ultimate Universe.  In it, each of the iconic characters had their story begin from scratch, similar to DC's decision to do New 52. I think they realized that movie audiences kind of knew who these characters were, liked them enough to buy comics but didn't know where to start.  It's not like they're going to hunt down issue one, which would be in a very old style, or know that it's okay to start at issue 534.  While it is fun to see a character's origin story it is more interesting to see how they interact with new storylines. To get there, the Ultimates moved a breakneck pace and it was refreshing to see these superheroes get shit done.

That's what I'm really digging about Arrow.  There might be meta-plot that takes a whole season to complete, each episode takes what would normally be an entire arc and gives it the whole "nobody got time for that" treatment. The solid stunt work in cohesion with the camera and editing also makes me enjoy Arrow. That was a breaking point for me for Agents of SHIELD and it's good to see a superhero show do well.

What do you like about Arrow?
