Unlike those peasants in Haqqislam and Ariadna, you've got a real Sniper Rifle. The MULTI Sniper Rifle is a luxury sports car. This weapon, wielded by any soldier, has a definite shot of taking out any other model. This is not a theoretical; such as, how many Keisotsu does it take to kill an Avatar, a MULTI Sniper Rifle (MSR) is a lethal weapon.
The MSR is a weapon that is rife of the "Who What" Problem. Unlike the MULTI Rifle, which has the option of Normal, Shock, Armor Piercing (AP) or (Double Action) DA Ammo on the ARO, the MSR is forced to choose between AP or DA with each shot. You should be clear with your opponent on which ammo you're using whenever you fire the MSR - it's not like you can default to Normal if left undeclared. Furthermore, the AP and DA Ammo do different amounts of damage.
Luckily for you, I have a handy tip: Until an opponent's Armor reaches 9, the DA selection is superior. With the change to AP MSR doing Damage 14 but DA MSR keeping Damage 15 with the edition change, DA is the option you usually select. Since AP Ammo does not slice through Cover, that Armor number should be the model's innate Armor. So, unless you are shooting at the Avatar use DA.
With the Range Band penalizing Short and Medium Ranges, you're going to want to stick a MSR user far back to ensure the majority of their shots occur in the Long Range Band. If you are an Infiltrator, don't place your MSR right on the centre line despite being able to do so. That is where Rifles and Boarding Shotgun Infiltrators live. They have close quarters mastery over a MSR, due to +3 to +6 Short Range superiority against your Short Range of -3.Usually, just 4" outside of your Deployment Zone is enough to gain a good look out.
This is an important thing to note, as that is where the Exclusion Zone starts and where the High-Value Target (HVT) resides. If someone is coming to go at your HVT, this means they need to go through your MSR wielder. That is the exact purpose of Sniper Rifles in Infinity: they don't kill, they just make going through a particular lane bothersome. Which is why they quite useful at following the 3 Maxims of Infinity.

They are both listed as being damage 15 in the table at the back of the book, I think the listing of Damage 14 in the text is just a mistake?
ReplyDeleteWell, I typed a whole post with math proving my point, but the comment board ate it. Suffice to say, until the official clarification is made, just agree with your group whether AP Multi Sniper DAM is 14 or 15. Either way, DA is at least marginally better than AP all the way up through ARM 8 targets in cover.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I don't understand how such a mistake could've been made. And there's been no official word but it is better than the doomsday scenario I had in mind for N3 when I first heard about it. I pictured the games creators releasing N3 and then drinking the koolaid so no one would be around to answer any questions.
DeleteAnd yeah, I did the math both ways and DA is superior until ARM 8.
