Paradiso 101 Narrative Campaign

Last week, I introduced playing Infinity as a Narrative Campaign.  Unfortunately, I cannot share with you the mission specifics to honour the wishes of Corvus Belli.  If you went out and bought Campaign: Paradiso you could follow alongside at home.  Again, this is 250 points and is from an archived thread in the Infinity Forums.  Point values and game play mechanics do not reflect Infinity's transition to N3 but almost all of it would translate.  Here we go with Paradiso 101:

The first six piled into the room, each having a momentary shock as they came across their three NCOs for the mission. Saladin sat elegantly, giving each soldier a warm smile as he sipped his tea. The Aleph Lhost was a living legend and he was joining the 45th Regiment on the first mission. The briefing was in front of them, as well as the notes of the personnel they were working with on this day. Khan, a Husam, graduated with top ranks in his class but otherwise bore a miserable expression as he sized up his colleagues.

Mohammed, an aged Ragik, browsed through the mission but wanted to hear what Tevesh's commands were. Barre, a Barid Hacker, was feeling out of touch from all his friends by being forced to turn off his Hacking Device for the debriefing. Barre began to regret his nicknames of the Kameel Baggage-REMs - Shrapnel Magnet-01 was sturdy but he found clumsy, while Roxanne-01 always seemed lonely to him. Ibrahim, a slothful, playful Kaplan, grew serious as he saw the recommended armaments. Yasmine, another Kaplan, became contemplative about her chances of surviving as she studied Aisha, a serious Ghulam Doctor, who made quick notations of the blood types of her comrades. Ayan, an Odalisque, had a graceful and poised expression who wore a gentle expression sat down last.

Tevesh began with the introductions but quickly proceeded to the mission briefing.

"Khan will be your second in Command, only after Saladin. The Old Man has blessed us with a Husam, though he may not be as bloodied as some of you, he is still Hassassin trained. Saladin will be your Lt. on the ground, obey his expertise in this mission. Do not forget Saladin is on loan from Aleph," Tevesh warned to which Saladin replied with a friendly smirk; "however, Aleph has more to lose in the potential outcome. Please do not let us be the regiment that gets him killed. I leave the floor to him."
"Thank you," Saladin ignored the slight and quickly took the reins, "Contact will boil down to whether we have the Initiative or gotten the superior placement. Personally, I believe that he who strikes first doesn't need to swing a second time so I will be having a forward plan. Should we take Initiative, Mohammed shall Infiltrate for the furthest objective and analyze the techno-device. If our gamble pays off, haul our winnings back. If it does not, may you have made peace with Allah.

"Yasmine, Ibrahim - you will be going after the techno-device should Mohammed be unlucky. Same strategy: review and retreat. Once the data is on our side and we've weathered the counter-assault, we will use Shrapnel Magnet-01 or Roxanne-01 to encrypt and transmit." Saladin had a slight chuckle as he read out the Baggage REM's designations.

"Should we take them unawares and have superior Deployment, we need to pray that they go after the wrong techno-device. If this were the case, Mohammed, I hope you have had a long and fulfilling life - you will be sent in via Dropship to cripple their Specialist infrastructure. You Ragiks understand the one way ride the most, I suppose. There is no other plan, they have taken the Initiative and we can only hope to break their tempo. Barre, guard yourself well, as you will need to block transmissions and survive the infidel's copy of Mohammed's glorious run.

"In either case, the great Sultan, Kerim Bey, has lent us two assets for this mission. Aisha, patch anyone you can. Ayan, you will be our couner-punch for any personnel who need assistance."

He gave direction like a gauntlet encased in a velvet glove. Saladin's m
ethods could be strong, but he understood the soft way worked better and that is what he used. Saladin was eloquent, issuing commands without pauses and filling the air without any 'Umms', 'Ahhs' or other useless verbage of the unprepared. Each soldier left the room with a distinct positive impression of the Aleph Lhost - which was exactly what he was programmed to do.

Mission 101 - Paradiso: Debriefing:
Tevesh was burning a glare at the calm Saladin and the battered Aisha. Saladin was patched up by the careful attention of Sophotects who mostly ignored the proceeding debriefing. Aisha slouched, ashamed that she was unable to save a single soul.

"What happened?" Tevesh evenly asked. He was straining not to shout, knowing it would be pointless against the Lhost. His fists pressed into the six personnel files as he awaited an answer. Aisha blankly stared at the files.

Saladin pushed a data file towards Tevesh. "We were engaged by this force at approximately 0635."

Tevesh turned his glare back to Saladin when he finished skimming, which the Lhost took as an invitation to continue.

"Mohammed was successful in his Airborne Infiltration, scanned the artifact after a few tense moments and informed us that the central artifact was important. I believe that the Yu Jing forces also heard this. Mohammed backed to a safer spot, as discussed during the debriefing. Ayan dealt with a revealed Guilang when the YuJing counter-offensive began.

"The Haramaki ran towards Mohammed and gunned him down. Their Pangguling issued a Trajectory Assist which quickly followed with an erratic Tiger Soldier. He dodged the fire of Ayan's Spitfire and downed Yasmine with a quick Pistol fire. True to its name, Shrapnel Magnet-01 drew Combi Rifle fire and was disabled. The Tiger Soldier moved to draw a bead on me, praise Allah for a through-and-through. The Crane climbed atop the centre, where we knew the important artifact lay, along with a Shang Ji bodyguard.

"Khan brought his shotgun to bear on the Tiger but the Yu Jing Soldier did not fall back. The Tiger lit brave Khan on fire, destroying Shrapnel Magnet-01 but the Muyib-trained Husam survived. Ayan moved to gain advantage against the Crane, but was under fire by the Haramaki's Blitzen. There was an exchange, Ayan had taken a hit but had dispatched the Haramaki and Crane.
"The Yu Jing forces were in a disarray with the lack of leadership; however, the Tiger Soldier took initiative to attempt to assassinate me. I scrambled behind Barre who was slain defending me with his own life.

"Khan killed the Tiger Soldier with his Rifle, but the Tiger had its revenge. Khan was killed by a Flamethrower. Ibrahim marched towards the central artifact, drawing fire from the Shang Ji. Ibrahim fired a Blitzen without effect and drew a wound from the Shang Ji before crouching in a defensive position. The Shang Ji had dropped prone to be out of sight from Ibrahim but within sight of the artifact. Ibrahim moved to attempt to retrieve the data. He gunned down the Shang Ji but came within range of the deadly Flamethrower and did not survive the encounter.

"Our Specialists lay dead, but realizing that Yu Jing would still be able to retrieve data from the artifacts, I ordered Ayan to rout the Yu Jing forces. She was nearly successful. Aisha and Roxanne-01 retreated while I surveyed the Odalisque's work. Ayan ran across the battlefield, slaying the Celestial Guard Hacker, the Gui Feng and disabling the Yu Jing Baggage drone. She was killed by the Yu Jing Engineer who managed to recover the data before I killed him.

"It was a unmitigated disaster," Saladin concluded.
"I think your ability is overstated," Tevesh growled. "I want you off my base as soon as Aleph allows. I'll ensure the Old Man's guards will take very good care of you." Saladin politely tiled his head at the rebuke. The Lhost gracefully stood while the Sophotect artfully took care of him. The Aleph pair walked out of the room and Aisha shrunk to be under Tevesh's withering gaze. His glare softened before he spoke to the Ghulam Doctor.

"Bey recommended you and Ayan, I see I am not disappointed by your survival and the excellence in which Ayan completed the mission. I'll see to have more of you available and now that you've seen all your comrades die, I know you'll be able to make the hard choices when you need to. I'm sure you know of other excellent Qapu Khalqi PMCs. Give me some suggestions." Tevesh stood.

He was walking out of the debriefing room. Aisha thought that was the end of the debriefing and was ready to stand as well when Tevesh stopped at the threshold. He had one final remark before he left.

"Remember my reputation, you'll most likely have to help Medvac them. Choose the best, I'm sure you don't want more deaths of your comrades."

  2. An online multiplayer mode was definitely true on my TODO list for this game. Infact, I was more into MSN on the flags for a while, but hated that it was still offline, and thus began this project.
