Infinity has a problem. A majority of players come indoctrinated from other tabletop games or board games where your options are limited. Here's a list of Common Skills that every model in the game can do. There will be a few exceptions; such as, Speculative Fire or Intuitive Fire, which requires the proper armament. Every model can perform:
Activate - Use Scenery
BS Attack - Shoot the Pew Pews
Cautious Move - Move First Half to avoid AROs
CC Attack - Cut Somebody
Change Facing - Spin to Win
Climb - Climb
Coup de Grace - Kill Unconscious Enemy
Discover - Discover Camouflage or Impersonator Markers
Dodge - Avoid Getting Shot
Engage - Get into Melee to Avoid Getting Shot
Idle - Do Nothing
Intuitive Attack - Use Direct Template Weapon on Camouflage or Impersonator Markers
Jump - Jump
Lean Out - Shoot Directly Below
Move - Move
Reset - Avoid Getting Hacked
Speculative Fire - Shoot at unseen enemy
Suppressive Fire - Gain Burst 3 in ARO
Man, when I played Warmachine your options were Move, Attack, Special Attack, Cast, Run or Charge. Every model in the game only had some of those options. Worse still, in Infinity, your model can Activate multiple times in a turn. This requires a lot of communication, especially as you check with your opponent for AROs at each stage of the Activation. This is the Who part of the "Who What" Now problem, but the Who is not the problem. It's the What is that gets troublesome.
Ghulam Light Infantry from Haqqislam is supposed to be the most basic model in the faction. Too bad that's a house of lies. A Ghulam Light Infantry is equipped with a Rifle, Light Shotgun, Pistol and Knife. Therein likes the What problem of Infinity. What weapon are you using? Is it your Rifle, your Light Shotgun or your Pistol? N3 has exacerbated the problem in that it made the Shotgun and Pistol good, so now these are options. Then you have a problem with more complex models.

These scenarios are not that far fetched, as I see many a time where it's unclear which weapon or mode is optimal and therefore used. If someone were to Engage an Asura in Melee and her Second Half was "Shoot" I wouldn't know what they meant. Shoot with what? Pistol is a good option this close and do they mean to use their Pistol as a CC Weapon? Their Nanopulser is an auto-hit which means the Aleph player doesn't need to rely on rolling dice, they might be fine with a trade especially if the Asura is a full health.
If this Asura has a MULTI Rifle, the problem is further exacerbated. With what Ammo? If the target is Armor 4 and Dogged or NWI, then all the options are viable. AP to punch through that Armor, Shock to kill them outright but less chance to Wound and Double Action to give the highest possibility of scoring a Wound. This is also problematic with all of the Blast or Antitank/Hit modes on Missile Launchers or Plasma. Antitank has AP, Hit does higher damage. Blast ignores Cover ARM Bonus.
"I Shoot with my Ghulam's LSG."
"I Shoot with Hit Mode with Carbine."
"I use DA on ARO."
"I won't oppose by firing a Nanopulser."
So, please answer "Who What" preemptively for your opponent. There's no "I Shoot". It's "I Shoot with a [Insert Violence Machine Here][with Applicable Ammo]".

It's not even an option, people! You have to do it. Page 31. :/
ReplyDeleteI still think Infinity could learn a lesson from Warmachine by making cards for different models with the non-profile specific rules on them. It would certainly make looking up the rules much easier, especially for newer players (such as myself).
ReplyDeleteAt the moment, if I use an Odalisque, I need to look up iKhol, NWI, Sixth Sense and 360 Visor in the rulebook, flicking back and forth and bogging the game down. Referring to a card for the models I have chosen would greatly speed up rules reference and provide a lower barrier of entry for new players.
I'm fortunate to have the type of temperament and inclination where I want to look things up up and enjoy that, but I do have friends that would be put off because they like to learn on the run so to speak.
