As a new segment here on CKP- We are going to start addressing specific "types" of units- defined by their capabilities/ uses, and battlefield roles. This helps us in other articles (so we can refer to a specific "type" of unit, rather than listing specific troops. These roles are not all encompassing, and some more expensive characters can serve as multiple roles- this is just defining the "minimum requirements" to fill the role.
For cheekiness- we are going to try to stick to the "official" american gangster slang- found here-http://www.onewal.com/maf-glos.html .
THE BUTTON MAN

| Nope, no, not at all |
The Button Man is the one that gets the beatings and killings done in the gang. His role is to put damage on enemy models. When the fighting gets thick- that is when the Button Man shines!
The Button Man can operate alone, he does not require synergy or combos. He can certainly benefit from them, but they are not required for him to work
He may not be fast or too smart- but if he finds you, you best be saying your prayers

WHAT MAKES THE BUTTON MAN......BUTTON?
There is one absolute feature for the BUTTON MAN- that is MINIMUM 2 damage per hit. This is TWICE the basic damage- and it shows- opponents can't Take It On the Chin - as the cost is too great - each hit results in a lost die- and nothing in the game can take 6 hits from a heavy.
The more focused a model is to this basic task, the more purely they can embody this role, the better.
What makes the heavy WORK is getting that damage consistently. A troop that cannot hit or wound with a 2 damage weapon, is not really performing the role of a heavy. Handy, combo, or a +1 to hit. Str AT LEAST 4+, more particularly 3+ is important to confirm the hits into solid damage.
High ATT values are also great, forcing tough decisions for opponents trying to block attacks- forcing an opponent to spend 2+ defence dice per attack is excellent WIP efficiency
Models armed with guns can sometimes cover this role- but they need a constant supply of ammo- and a consistent way to hit before they are a true Button Man (this means the assault rifle troops do NOT qualify- they are HEAVY)
With a Button Man looking for fights- they need to also be able to take some hits. BIG characters, Insensitive and sturdy characters can usually take a hit or two but still dish out their full potential
So, get out there, it's time to bump off a contract!
Some Examples of Solid Button Men
Titan Henchmen (gloves, good attack, good STR)
Killer Croc, Clayface, Grundy
Deadshot
Emperor Penguin
SMASH
RAS al Ghul
Deathstroke
Nightwing (handy, combo, mechanic 2stun weapon)
Bane (all kinds)
Ozymandias, Comedian, Rorschach
Hammer, Borgon, Master of cerimonies
AAAANNNNDDD Batman of course!- 4-5 ATT, Gloves or better, Combo, 3+ STR, is some well rounded abilites!
Honorary mentions-
High Security Henchman- Combo (to make up for 1dmg attacks), 3+ sharp weapons, 4 ATT
Ninjas- 2blood handy sharp weapons, but ATT of only 3, and STR 5+ keeps them from holding the list
What do you think, who else should be on the list?

Wouldn't Zsasz cut the list of the Button clickers? Sharp XO 4+ weapons with Dev. Blow, Def 4 ATT 4 that go up to 5 if he takes a hit seems to make him a good pick for the role. Is it due to Deathmarks potentially splitting his roles up??
ReplyDeleteYes he would! I intentionally left a few off for discussion! Zsasz is a very good Button Man!
