THEORY THURSDAY- Size matters

BMG is a shockingly well balanced game- streets ahead of other "current" miniatures games. Whenever a model is proposed to be over or under-powered, I try to look more closely at their abilities and stats

The key to balance I am finding is more and more relevant- SIZE

"big" characters are crazy valuable- in no small part to the fact that they really can do a lot of heavy lifting (read: beating) for the gangs they work for

Lets look at all the rules contained here:

12cm basic move- doesn't seem like much, but makes a world of difference- lets you catch Acrobats, out range basic characters that don't have dice assigned to mov (I've seen some beautiful guerilla tactics from BANE)

Don't get KNOCKED DOWN, except by other big characters- this means they are very rarely vulnerable- where characters like batman are just undone by a knockdown result

Cannot be grabbed. This provides an immunity from IVY's Mortal Kiss, and other dangerous GRABs

Cannot be PUSHED. Making them safe on rooftops and ledges.

CHARGE- An interesting (if underused) skill, allowing BIG characters to break through blocking or defensive models

Resilient- Although most big characters have a fairly high endurance to begin with- "resilient" is an extremely valuable ability for shaking off KO, and getting back into the fight.

Sewer "advantage"- It takes 2 characters to prevent a "big" character from exiting the sewers

Above and beyond the "basic" advantages, there are a few other peripheral gains to be had from big characters.

• More areas are "narrow" for big characters. As the "defensive position" advantage is up to 2cm larger than the base of the model, and big characters have larger bases, this lets BIG characters gain defensive bonuses in areas up to 6cm wide.

• Minimum reinforced gloves. All big characters can lay out serious damage in melee. This could be a coincidence, but it is worth noting that this is the rule currently

• Larger engagement footprint. A BIG character can attack multiple foes that are placed further away. this lets them put their high attack and damage to good effect

• Can push plants, instantly killing them- Hopefully, some day lamp posts will have the same rule applied, so Big characters can charge through a lamppost, and knock it out of the way!

This battery of skills comes at a relative deal for the models that have it- and when used correctly- can be dangerously effective!

So, will you be trying out BIG characters?

  1. I was thinking of maybe trying out Clayface, eventually. I like the Mud Pack.

  2. I love me my Origins Bane. What about the weaknesses of big characters, though? How do they factor in? (chiefly blink penalties...yikes!)

  3. Good article, but +1 VP for 'streets ahead.'
